Physical Rehabilitation (Physical Therapy) at Pacific Park Animal Hospital

Pet Rehabilitation Pacific Park Animal HospitalPacific Park is pleased to offer physical rehabilitation as a healing option for your companion. Physical rehabilitation for dogs and cats is like physical therapy for humans (in the state of California, “physical therapy” is a protected legal term for humans, so the veterinary field calls physical therapy adapted for dogs and cats “physical rehabilitation”). Physical rehabilitation at Pacific Park includes a multitude of therapies including cold laser, manual therapy, therapeutic exercise and electrical stimulation. The goal of physical rehabilitation is to optimize recovery and improve functional mobility. We meet patients at their current ability level and formulate a multi-modal plan to increase their comfort and strength.

Many of our four-footed companions benefit significantly from rehabilitation. Of course, any animal that has had orthopedic or neurologic surgery is an ideal candidate for physical rehabilitation. Additionally, older companions with arthritis that maybe “just seems to be slowing down” benefit greatly from rehabilitation plans. Controlled, gentle exercise and laser treatments make a huge difference in these patients. Finally, overweight animals can get the jump start they need to achieve a healthier weight, which will greatly improve the quality of their life.

Here is a list of potential reasons you may consider physical rehabilitation for your companion

  • Spinal Surgery
  • Spinal Pain and/or decreased neurologic function from the following conditions:
  • Joint surgery and arthroscopy
  • Obesity
  • Senior/geratric pets
    • Osteoarthritis
    • Idiopathic canine vestibular disease
  • Soft tissue injuries
  • Strains, sprains, tendonitis, tendonosis
  • Conditioning

This list does not include all of the conditions that may benefit from rehabilitation, but are some of the major conditions. Together, during an extended appointment time, we will go over your companion’s medical and surgical history, including all labs and x-rays you may have. Our veterinarian's will perform a comprehensive musculoskeletal and/or neurologic exam, taking measurements as necessary. Further testing may be recommended to narrow down a diagnosis.

Once we have the best idea about your companion’s overall functional ability, we will give you a rehabilitation therapy plan and set goals for improvement. Plans usually consist of 2-3 visits per week for intensive therapy and exercises for you to do at home. If your companion is immediately post-operative, we offer day boarding with physical rehabilitation to care for your companion during the day and keep him or her on the road to a speedy recovery. Other suggestions regarding assistive devices, home environment modifications and safety, medications, diet and supplements may also be covered.

We look forward to meeting you and your companion to work together towards increased comfort and ability!
